Abstract

This report presents a comprehensive overview of the IFLA World Library and Information Congress (WLIC 2025), held in Astana, Kazakhstan, from 18–22 August 2025, with pre-conference meetings on 17 August. Marking the first IFLA congress in Central Asia, the event highlighted the region’s emerging role as a hub for knowledge, innovation, and international cooperation.

The scientific and cultural program covered a wide range of pressing themes, including the integration of artificial intelligence in libraries, the advancement of open science, the preservation of digital heritage, sustainability, and digital inclusion. Keynote speakers from renowned global institutions enriched the discussions, while technological innovations and practical solutions showcased new possibilities for library services.

The congress featured more than one hundred sessions organized by IFLA’s professional units, in addition to workshops and interactive activities. Awards were presented to outstanding projects and initiatives, reflecting the community’s commitment to excellence and innovation. Participation statistics further demonstrated the congress’s global reach, with representation from across continents.

The report concludes by highlighting the declared outcomes and the future directions they signal: positioning libraries as vital knowledge centers, engines of innovation, and essential enablers of information equity and sustainable development worldwide.
