Abstract

Libraries today face increasing challenges related to environmental and social sustainability, prompting them to adopt new roles aligned with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The concept of the "green library" has recently emerged and is undergoing continuous development. Due to its relative novelty, it is gaining popularity among researchers, academics, and library professionals worldwide. Although the amount of information available on "green libraries" and "sustainability" is still limited, it continues to grow. Topics related to green libraries and sustainability have received significant attention in recent years in various publications targeting librarians globally.
This study addresses the concept of green libraries as a modern model aimed at reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices within communities. It highlights library strategies for achieving sustainability through eco-friendly architectural design, the application of sustainable technology, and fostering environmental awareness among users. The paper reviews a range of global and local experiences in establishing green libraries, analyzing their role in advancing sustainable development across its three dimensions: environmental, economic, and social. The study aims to provide practical recommendations to support the transformation of traditional libraries into sustainable libraries that contribute to achieving comprehensive developmental goals.
